In October 1962, community leaders, local clergy, and business owners from Hickory and Palos Hills met at the Walnut Hills Country Club. This meeting established the Green Hills Library Association.

The first step in their goals was to sponsor a dance to help raise money to help pay the costs for the creation of the library. On November 24, 1962, the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills held a dance sponsored by the newly established Green Hills Library Association.   This dance was very successful and raised around $3,200.

A Referendum was held on December 8, 1962, to establish the Green Hills Public Library District. The district also appointed six trustees: Herman Conrady, John Curtis, Lila Ellison, Grace Kordisch, Mabel Muhonen, and Ben Warren.

The first Green Hills Public Library was in an old storefront at 10714 S. Roberts Road in Palos Hills.

13,190 books circulated during the library's first year. The first librarian was Lila Ellison Warren. She had assistance in organizing the Library by Mr. William McKillop from the Library at Tinley Park High School.
